Come play with us – George & a world of uke music

South Cheshire Branch, George Formby Society

About

Our mission is:

celebrating the legacy of George Formby and all things ukulele.

George Formby is one of the most famous British ukulele players ever. He was also a comedian, actor, performer, film star and banned by the BBC for many years.

He famously played the banjo ukulele or banjolele but did also play wooden ukuleles now and then. His roles ranged from loveable working man to soldier, policeman and even a TT rider. Today it is easy to see his songs as flippant but they are often well constructed and witty. They are also able to be played by novice players yet to play the truly like George means learning specialised strokes such as the famous split and fan strokes.

We don’t restrict ourself to George though because we all love the ukulele and many walks of music.

We share our passion by presenting Open Mic concerts monthly and through public performances such as appearing at the Wheels of War where we played 1940s music and shared the stage with Winston Churchill.

We aim to have a good time and foster a sense of community among banjolele and ukulele players, and memorably entertaining audiences at all of our concerts.
